Freelance platforms are basically your training wheels when you start freelancing.

They are your go-to place for finding clients when you have no idea where to begin yet.

They also protect your work, which matters a lot when you are new and still figuring things out.

I tried other platforms like Fiverr, Freelancer.com, and PeoplePerHour. They are fine. But I keep coming back to my first home, Upwork.

And yes, I have a name for people like me. Upwork babies.

Like what I've mentioned in my previous newsletter, Upwork is my personal recommendation for beginners in freelancing.

A lot of freelancers I know back home started there too. Even me. We learned there. We made mistakes there. We figured things out there.

Why Upwork?

Not just because many of us started there, but because it actually works well for beginners.

Quick note before anyone overthinks this. I am not affiliated with Upwork. No links. No commission. I just share tools and resources that genuinely help beginners.

Upwork makes things easier when you are starting out.

  • You do not have to wait for clients to magically find you.

  • You can actively search and apply to projects.

  • Your work is protected through their payment system, so you are not stressing about getting paid.

There is less admin work, which means more time learning and applying for projects.

  • It is free to low cost to start.

  • You can create an account for free, get Connects to send proposals, and you do not need extra tools just to manage clients or payments.

  • You get to try different types of projects and industries, which helps you figure out what you are actually good at and what you enjoy.

  • Client reviews help you build trust faster, which can lead to better clients over time.

  • And because it is global, you can work with clients from anywhere, even as a beginner.

When I started using Upwork, I slowly realized how much work it saves you.

If you are not using a freelance platform, you have to do everything yourself.

Find clients, write proposals, create contracts, arrange payments, handle admin work. That is a lot, especially when you are just starting.

Upwork already carries most of that weight for you.

You get:

  • A free account with no monthly payment on the Basic plan

  • Access to thousands of remote jobs worldwide

  • Free Connects to apply to projects, plus monthly Connects

  • Payment protection through escrow and hourly tracking

  • A public profile where you can show your skills, portfolio, and reviews as you grow

And honestly, these benefits are not just for beginners. Any freelancer who wants structure, safety, and less stress can benefit from this

What Upwork protects me from?

Upwork is not just a beginner-friendly platform with lots of opportunities. Upwork can also protect you like the way it protects me.

Upwork protected me from bad situations I did not know how to handle back then.

Clients disappearing.

Late payments.

Confusing scopes.

On Upwork,

There were clear rules.

Clear timelines.

And a system that backed me up when things got uncomfortable.

That safety net mattered more than I realized at the time.

Another thing it protected me from was myself. From applying everywhere, saying yes to everything, and burning out too early.

Staying on one platform helped me stay focused, track my applications, and understand what kind of work and clients I was actually good at.

Again, I am not saying Upwork is the only way. I am saying it was the right way for me at the beginning.

If you are new and still learning, protection matters. Structure matters. Having one place to build credibility matters.

You can explore other options later. But when you are just starting, being protected is not a weakness. It is smart.

So if I were giving you advice as a friend, it would be this.

Stop trying to do everything alone right away.

Use a freelance platform as your starting point.

  • Learn there.

  • Make mistakes there.

  • Build confidence there.

Training wheels are not embarrassing.

They are smart.

You can always take them off later, when you actually know how to ride.
